A successful highlight for the ceramics sector and the industries using this highly innovative material: ceramitec conference with the accompanying trade exhibition took place at Munich’s trade fair center on September 15 and 16.
“At ceramitec conference, our customers were finally able to enter into a direct face-to-face exchange with partners, experts and customers again,” explains Dr. Robert Schönberger, Exhibition Director ceramitec. “For two days, top specialists intensively discussed innovations and applications in the ceramics industry. Thus, this focused conference provided a wonderful bridge to the June 2022 show.” Messe München's protection and hygiene concept—already tried and tested at the major IAA Mobility event—guaranteed a safe gathering.
About 300 participants from 18 countries took part. In 3 concurrent conference tracks, 80 experts highlighted technical ceramics, additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy, process control, equipment supply and materials. The program was curated by the partners AM Ceramics, the Ceramic Applications network, the Ceramic Injection Molding (CIM) expert group, the Fraunhofer ISC and the Institute of Applied Powder Metallurgy and Ceramics (IAPK). 31 companies—including Cremer Thermoprocessing Equipment, ECT-Kema, Lithoz, Maschinenfabrik Gustav Eirich and Washington Mills—presented their products in an accompanying exhibition. “As an exhibitor at ceramitec conference, we were able to maintain our network and establish new contacts. Now, we are looking forward to the big trade show in 2022,” says Dr. Jürgen Blumm, Managing Director of Netzsch Gerätebau GmbH and Chairman of the Advisory Board of ceramitec.
Ceramics are ideal for many demanding applications—for example in aerospace. “NASA is currently developing metal, ceramic and polymer additive manufacturing processes for enabling and critical applications in support of robotic space exploration missions. Additive processes allow for the possibility of fabricating complex geometries with functional and structural materials that have been traditionally difficult to manufacture by traditional means,” explains Samad Firdosy from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory/California Institute of Technology. Ceramics also play an important role in dentistry. “Lithium disilicate (LiSi2) is a unique dental ceramic due to its great optical characteristics, especially translucency in combination with good mechanical properties, such as strength and fracture toughness. Therefor it is favored for restorations especially in the anterior region,” explains Dr. Ing. Franziska Schmidt, Charité Universitätsmedizin. And at the conference, Prof. Dr Alexander Michaelis, Institute Director, Fraunhofer IKTS, explained: “Due to the unique material properties ceramic products play an essential role for the development of system solutions for the envisioned future hydrogen economy. Examples are ceramic-based electrolysis for H2 production or sensor technology for harsh environments. Hydrogen cannot be efficiently produced without the use of ceramic materials.”
